I have been busy analyzing the various histories of the past for decades. For example, I conducted interviews for CBS News’ “60 Minutes and the Wall Street Journal’s Three Horsemen, 1973-1983,” and I conducted the lead TV interview of the program, which included Dick Cheney, and Michael Beschneider, a former director of the CIA who described the role his agency played in the rise of the Islamic extremists who opposed Tony Blair in the 1990s and against Saddam Hussein in 1991. These interviews were the starting point in my initial and continuing work. I look back on them now and consider myself fortunate to survive them.

While they were, I sometimes went through their minds. A few of the interviews come from former troops left in active duty, or who in their time have undergone combat experiences in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars or Iraq’s current government, such as myself. I don’t think I’ve told you what those military men felt while there were active service, only to wonder later why they’re not speaking of what happened to them. What did they know they were facing? Did they worry about being wounded or shot or incarcerated in Iraq or Afghanistan? Who was their favorite writer or entertainer or friend or follower? Many of the stories in these tapes are largely forgotten by our understanding and informed research, but some remain relevant politically. For example, in 1991, Iraq invaded Kuwait after the Soviet Union took over the country.
